“ How might we motivate non-traditional learners to take their first steps into a new way of learning with confidence?”

The objective was to investigate how the brand could keep more consumers engaged in learning systems. To achieve this, I conducted extensive research on the target audience's needs and preferences. With a team of designers, we developed innovative solutions and iterated on our designs until we found the most effective strategies.

Prospective learners

Ongoing learners

Ease of use: All important information needs to be easy to understand and have significant purpose.

Visually intriguing: To captivate users' attention, making the onboarding process engaging and memorable. It fosters a sense of belonging, ensuring users feel connected to a vibrant learning community, reducing feelings of isolation and motivating active participation.

Final Solution

  • Researched competitors’ platform and concepts that enables user’s high engagement

  • Designed hi-fidelity figma prototypes

  • Tested prototypes on users and synthesized their feedback

  • Constructed story to pitch concept of new online learning platform to managers and clients

Feature 2: Forum

Feature 1: Study Group

Small group of learners progressing together to keep each other accountable and provide motivation and emotional support to each other.

Takeaways

  • UX: 'Seamless' and 'quick' aren't synonymous. Strive to create an experience that flows smoothly; don't simply eliminate steps.

  • User Testing: Everything you want feedback on should be present in the prototype. Hypotheticals diminish validity of feedback.

1. Customize study group based on preference

  • Ask preference on user time zone to personalize their study group based on the user's priority.

  • Grouping based on personal deadlines to finish a course to progress at the same pace with fellow learners who have the same goals.

2. Opportunity for networking

  • Option provided to take conversations off the platform, and easily access study groups through mobile or desktop based on one’s preference.

Project Details

Athena is an alias used for an online learning platform that we used during the project. One of Athena’s struggles was to retain the current users and bring in new users into the platform. Thus I designed several solutions to encourage new users to start the course and reduce dropout rates, ultimately improving the user experience and increasing user engagement.

  • Conducted surveys and interviews with the target audience to understand their needs, preferences, and pain points related to online learning platforms.

  • Analyzed user data to identify patterns and trends in user behavior.

  • Created a low-fidelity prototype on Figma of the online learning platform that addressed the identified pain points and met the needs and preferences of the target audience.

  • Conducted an initial user testing to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement.

  • We made motifications through several cycles of feedback, and made changes and improvements to the prototype to address the identified pain points and improve the user experience.

  • Conducted a second round of user testing to ensure that the changes have improved the user experience through a high-fidelity prototype.

  • With the solution of providing “Curated Cohorts”, we divided the theme into two concepts, study group and forum.

  • Our solution can encourage users to initiate the course as soon as they enroll in the online learning platform and reduce the dropping-out problem, ultimately improving the user experience and increasing user engagement.

Through the larger community based on the forum, the forum serves as a space to provide and receive high quality answers from professionals with a faster response time and thus provide confidence towards the learners.

1. Ask and resolve doubts as you encounter them

  • While inputting a new question, a list of related questions posed by other students will show up to help prevent queries that have already been asked and answered.

2. Tags and buttons that improves the user’s experience with questions

  • When a question is answered, a notification alert button allows you to keep track of it and receive updates.

  • Experts from various fields can follow a tag and respond to inquiries in which they are knowledgeable.

  • Pivoting: Avoid committing to the initial idea; despite validating the opportunity, the initial solution may prove wrong.

  • Storytelling: Clients will review your presentation deck afterward, so don't rely solely on voice-over to convey your narrative.
